New
Publisher Opens for Business
If you ask her
what makes a good publishing firm, editorial director
Nadene Carter will reply in a tone of voice that
suggests she’s thought long and hard about this topic.
As an author, editor, writing coach, and publisher,
Nadene has been around the world of books for many
years. Now she’s an enthusiastic partner in
NorlightsPress.com, an indie press launched in March,
2009.
Question:
Nadene, people might say you’re crazy for starting a new
business in these troubled economic times.
How can you hope
to succeed when large publishers are downsizing, merging
with other publishing houses, or going out of business?
Nadene:
The short answer—we’re probably crazy. The longer, more
introspective answer—maybe not.
Collectively, we at NorLightsPress.com have an
abiding love and respect for books. Many good
manuscripts are rejected because they don’t fit the
narrow window created by large publishing houses. We
don’t need to sell 50,000 copies of a book to make a
profit.
Question:
But why now?
Why not wait until things improve?
Nadene:
During each downturn in the U.S. economy, people keep a
tight hold on their spendable cash. But they still long
to be transported away from their problems, and we
believe they’ll turn to reading as a means of escape.
I believe there will always be a place for print
books (my personal favorite), but the advent of
electronic books makes access affordable and immediate,
saving time and gasoline.
Also, the very
structure of a large publishing house makes it
vulnerable to failure in hard economic times. A big
advantage: we don’t have the expense and overhead of the
large publishers. The traditional small press publishing
model, on which we built NorLightsPress.com, facilitates
transparent communication and coordination between
departments. Each department knows where a particular
book is in the workflow, and we constantly monitor the
cost and quality of our products.
Question:
Tell us about your staff.
Nadene:
Each member of
NorLightsPress.com brings unique talents and
interests that
contribute to the success of every title. We have
experience evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of a
manuscript; guiding authors through the development of
books; editing and preparing manuscripts for offload to
the printer; and guiding authors to achieve a strong
Internet presence.
Question:
What kind of books are you looking for?
Nadene:
In nonfiction we’re looking for titles pertaining to
business, health and wellness, psychology, advice and
relationships, women’s issues, memoir, cooking and food,
spirituality, New Age, science, true crime, animals, and
current affairs.
We’re willing to consider almost any nonfiction
topic.
We’re also
looking for exceptional fiction in the following
categories: Women’s fiction, Christian fiction,
mainstream, multi-cultural, Romance (no erotica),
mystery (including sub-genres and crossovers), and U.S.
historical. We accept science fiction and fantasy on a
limited basis, and only if exceptional. Ask yourself:
Will my story wow this publisher?
Question:
What about marketing?
Nadene:
We don’t have a huge marketing budget, so an author’s
platform is important. We form a partnership with
authors to develop marketing channels that will bring
each book in front of the reading public. We appreciate
ambitious authors who want to promote their books.
Question:
How many titles will you offer this year?
Nadene:
We’re working tirelessly to bring 25 titles to the
market within the first six months.
Question:
How do you distinguish yourselves from other publishers?
Nadene Carter:
For one thing, we won’t compromise on quality. Each of
our books receives careful editing and proofreading,
professional cover art, and promotional support. We’re
fully integrated to the Internet and will offer eBooks
and other digital and electronic versions of our titles.
We’re also small enough to quickly adapt to market
conditions.
Question:
How may authors contact you?
Nadene:
Authors with a nonfiction book proposal or a
unique fiction manuscript may contact us at
info@norlightspress.com.
